At least 20% of all cancers worldwide are caused by viruses and bacteria. Eliminating infections with these agents is a primary approach to preventing the development of these cancers. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is an ideal example of this tactic. Clinical trials demonstrate nearly 100% vaccine effectiveness in preventing certain precancers caused by HPV. Join us for a presentation of the science behind the vaccine and a discussion of who should be vaccinated and the roadblocks associated with global vaccination implementation.
